A Journey By Way Of Nose
VAM Terrain Fragrances

AN OLFACTIVE HOLOGRAM, REFLECTING THE AROMATIC CONTOURS
OF THREE DISTINCT REGIONS OF SCOTLAND THROUGH THREE ROOM SCENTS
AND AN OLFACTIVE OBJECT.

CASE STUDY
Launched in 2015, Norlan is an international brand focused on modernizing the whisky drinking experience through design, science and ritual.

THE BRIEF
Expanding Norlan's commitment to enhancing the sensory engagement of its customers, Studio Folie was entrusted with developing the olfactive identity, strategy and products for Norlan's first room scent collection. The scope was to realize three unique room scents created in response to three specific regions in Scotland. The final fragrances were intended to transport their customers to a distant terrain while enjoying a glass of whiskey in the comfort of their own environment.

IDEAS
The first step was to create an olfactive identity for the Norlan brand itself, through a close study of the brand's concept, product offerings, audience and the materials used in production. This identity study would result in the "Norlan Accord", a combination of meticulously crafted naturals and synthetics that would create the foundation in which each of the fragrances were built on. Our perfumer travelled through the terrains of Scotland - Highland, Islay and Skye, they took notes, botanicals, air samples and aromatics mnemonics. From this an olfactive odyssey was born, the total recall of the journey through these distinct regions in Scotland was achieved in the fragrances, while maintaining the voice of Norlan whispering in each scent through the "Norlan Accord".

REALIZATIONS
A modernization of the olfactive sensibility, application and diffusion of the room scent format. Instead of creating a traditional candle or room spray, we looked beyond traditional methods of scent application and diffusion. Through extensive research of various materials used in architecture, a design object was created where the room scents can be applied to the surface and diffused within a space.
