The Olfactive Conjuring Of
Ghosts At A Techno Party

CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF NYC'S MOST ICONIC UNDERGROUND MUSIC EVENT PRODUCED BY MATTE PROJECTS WITH A LIMITED EDITION CANDLE AND OLFACTIVE INSTALLATION.

CASE STUDY
For their annual BLACK NYC event MATTE PROJECTS took over a 40,000 square feet warehouse to offer an unforgettable synthesis of underground music and art for 5,000 guests.

THE BRIEF
Studio FOLIE was commissioned to translate the spirit of BLACK into the form of a fragrance to be integrated into the onsite experience and promotions of the event.

REALIZATIONS
In response to the history and physical site of the event and a series of conversations with its creators, the smell of BLACK was conceived by Lucas Sieuzac and developed into a limited edition candle that served as a VIP invitation by mail, and an immersive olfactive installation at the event, titled GHOST. Small bottles of the scent were individually offered at the event, and lives on as the olfactive identity for this iconic New York happening.

“We tend to think of concerts, parties, art experiences, as primarily spectacles of sight and sound. Maybe we’ll remember the feel of people against us on a dancefloor or a drink or bite we tasted with friends. But for this year’s BLACK we wanted to extend the sensory experience, and with scent so closely related to memory, recognition, and identity, we felt it was time to bring the olfactory into play. With Studio FOLIE, we have developed a scent that represents BLACK as an experience, brand, and moment. We are excited to see how people interact with this sensation and continue to consider how it can be incorporated into the future.”

“The scent explores the many facets of darkness, built around ingredients such a vetiver, cyprio, and styrax, and the variety of textures present in a warehouse party, including cement. Yet, there is a warmth and sense of comfort with the smell of resin and a complexity and deepness with ingredients such as leather accords, clergy sage, cedarwood, and ginger, framing the spirit of MATTE Projects.” —
